Speaker Volume Comparison: iPhone 6 Plus Vs iPhone 6 Vs Every Other iPhone Ever Released [Video]

Can you believe that there have now been ten different iPhones released since its initial inception back in 2007? It’s a number we can’t say we’d thought about until we came across a video comparing the speaker volume of all the handsets till date.
Ten!
With that out of the way, the testing done revolves around an issue that has actually plagued the iPhone since day one. Namely, the speaker on early iPhones was abysmal, particularly when it came to its rather low maximum volume. Things improved over the years, culminating in the current state of play that sees the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus seemingly much louder than any of their predecessors. But have you ever wondered just how much louder or, indeed, whether it was all in your head in the first place?

That brings us back to the iClarified test in which it took one of every iPhone and placed a volume meter underneath its speaker. To test just how loud the thing was, the team played the same track on every iPhone at maximum volume and then recorded the reading given by the volume meter. The end result? We were all right at least to some extent.

Ever since the original iPhone’s 94.3 dBA maximum, the iPhone’s speaker volume has tended to increase with some exceptions such as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5c. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are, as expected, both louder than any iPhone that came before them – both capable of 105 dBA at their top end.

The final results are as follows:
● iPhone 2G: 94.3 dBA
● iPhone 3G: 98.6 dBA
● iPhone 3GS: 103.6 dBA
● iPhone 4: 92.9 dBA
● iPhone 4S: 101.1 dBA
● iPhone 5: 104.0 dBA
● iPhone 5c: 102.0 dBA
● iPhone 5s: 103.6 dBA
● iPhone 6: 105.4 dBA
● iPhone 6+: 105.0 dBA

This is all pretty pointless in the grand scheme of things, but it’s good to know that Apple is at least improving upon the original iPhone’s poor speaker performance. Manufacturers such as HTC are still better at coming up with solutions to the speaker problem, but with most people using external Bluetooth speaks or indeed headphones, we doubt too many will be basing their buying decision on the dBA rating of a phone’s speaker.
